Easiest Quilt Block
When I made this reel, I never expected it to be as divisive as it was. It is simply a fun, easy block that is quick to make. You don’t have to precut or sew triangles!
If you’re looking at it and thinking “but all the points are cut off!”, don’t think of it as a Square in a Square block, but more like a Pineapple block. It was never intended to have points!
And if you’re looking at it and thinking “what about the bias edges?”, don’t panic! Bias (diagonal grain) edges are not a big deal! You can starch your fabric or blocks (as I did), or you could run some stay stitching around the edge of each finished block, but you really don’t have to. And the little bit of stretch from the bias edges is actually great for beginners, as it makes the blocks forgiving and easy to line up!
I made 80 blocks in true assembly line fashion: I sewed all the center blocks while chain piecing. Then I marked, cut, and ironed them all. Then I sewed the final square, and marked, cut and ironed again. I used a custom plexiglass template (instructions here) to cut them all to size. The best thing about these blocks are you can make them in any size (charm packs, mini charm packs, or layer cakes work great for this, paired with some extra yardage!).
I added a border from my extra yardage. Now I just have to quilt it! I’m thinking of a paw print motif because my center squares were made using Meow or Never by Moda fabrics.
